Organizations transitioning from ISO 14001:2015 should be aware of these key updates introduced in ISO 14001:2026:
 

• Clause 3.1.3 Policy Definitions: The definition has evolved from "Environmental Policy" to a broader "Organizational Policy" that includes the environmental policy focused on performance.

• Clause 4.1 Organizational Context: Expanded to explicitly include environmental conditions such as pollution, natural resource availability, climate change, and biodiversity.

• Clause 6.1.4 Risks and Opportunities: In the 2026 edition, "Risks and Opportunities" is now its own dedicated section. In the 2015 version, this topic was covered under 6.1.1 General, giving it greater structural prominence.

• Clause 6.2.1 Environmental Objectives: Objectives shall now be "available as documented information" instead of being "maintained."

• Clause 6.3 Planning of Changes: A new clause requiring organizations to plan changes driven by internal or external factors.

• Clause 6.3, Annex A.6.3: provides guidance on impacts to risk registers, communication plans, and process updates.

• Clause 9.3 Management Review: Reorganized into three subsections: 9.3.1 (General), 9.3.2 (Inputs), and 9.3.3 (Results). The requirements remain consistent but are presented in a more structured format.

• Clause 10.1 Continual Improvement: The previous 10.1 General and 10.3 Continual Improvement clauses have been merged into a single Continual Improvement clause.
